In this evocative video, we see the astonishing moment a kayaker, Adrian Simancas, is swallowed whole by a humpback whale off the coast of Patagonia, Chile.
The incident lasted only a few seconds, before he was miraculously regurgitated by the whale.
Last Saturday, Adrian was kayaking in the Strait of Magellan, in Bahía El Águila, when the humpback whale emerged from the depths of the sea and easily swallowed Adrian and his yellow kayak.
The incident was accidentally recorded by his father, Dell Simancas, who followed behind and saw everything firsthand.
Adrian expressed, "I thought I had been eaten and swallowed by that whale."
Quoted from the New York Post on Friday, February 14, 2025, he recounted, "At first, I thought I was dead." Of course, it felt like an immense fear because I felt there was nothing I could do.
Adrian also described the sensation of something blue and white passing near his face. Then he had the sudden feeling that he was drowning.
"When I turned, I felt something blue and white pass close to my face, on one side and above," he said.
"I don't understand what happened." Then everything... "I sank and thought I had been swallowed," he continued.
However, luck was on Adrian's side. The whale quickly spit out the young man. Luckily, he did not suffer any injuries.
His father, Dell, who was in a separate kayak, recorded the whole incident.
After being freed from the whale's mouth, Adrian was terrified because he feared something might happen to his father who was still at sea.
“When I surfaced and started floating, I was afraid that something would happen to my father too, afraid that we wouldn't reach the shore in time, or afraid that I would get hypothermia,” he said.
In the video, Adrian is seen swimming towards his father's kayak.
Luckily, both made it to shore safely.
Although Adrian initially thought he was swallowed by a killer whale, after the incident he suggested that perhaps the whale only approached him out of curiosity, or perhaps it had other intentions.
“Maybe the whale approached me to tell me something,” he said reflectively.
The Strait of Magellan, located 1,600 miles south of Chile's capital Santiago, is a popular adventure destination for tourists.
While whale attacks on humans are rare, this incident proves just how big and powerful these sea creatures can be.
